Prostate-Specific-Antigen PSA Test

The PSA test is commonly used to screen for prostate cancer.

PSA is a protein largely produced by the normal cells of the prostate gland.

In the prostate gland, PSA is produced, not necessarily in response to cancer, but in response to pressure.

If a cancer tumor is growing inside the prostate gland, it puts pressure on the normal cells of the prostate gland.

In reaction, these normal cells produce PSA to fight the cancer tumor.

And as the tumor enlarges, more PSA is created.

However, if that tumor is growing outside the prostate gland, the PSA will not rise.

Various scientific studies have shown that PSA fights prostate cancer by obstructing the tumors ability to develop new blood vessels for food supply in order to slow the growth of the tumor.

And the more PSA that is produced, the higher the amount that is leaked into the bloodstream. The PSA test uses the blood.

On their online news, the American Cancer Society ACS, wrote;

Unlike what most prostate cancer patients are meant to believe, they need the PSA for their healing.

“PSA may be fighting prostate cancer. It may be an angiogenesis inhibitor, meaning it may work to slow or stop the growth of tumors by shutting off the blood vessels that feed them”

Unfortunately, when men with prostate cancer are treated with hormone therapy, the PSA is artificially blocked.

Apart from cancer, there are other factors can put pressure on the prostate gland, and thereby triggering the elevation of blood makes PSA.

These factors include prostate enlargement, prostatitis, urinary infection, prostate biopsy, cystoscopy, transurethral resection of the prostate and other mechanical manipulation of the prostate gland.

Health And Wellness Updates

It is normal in healthy men, for the ” Prostate – Specific – Antigen ” PSA to leak into the bloodstream.

And the amount of that is leaked into the bloodstream is what the PSA test is designed to detect.

The PSA test was initially used to monitor and care for men who already had been diagnosed of prostate cancer.

But it was later approved for the general public as an early blood test for cancer detection, and since then, physicians have relied more on it as a cancer diagnostic.

However, we now know that the PSA test is not as accurate at measuring prostate cancer as many men have been led to believe.

First, the name “Prostate- Specific – Antigen” is misleading because the name implies that this protein is only produced by the prostate gland.

But that is not the case because the PSA is also produced within the breast tissues of both men and women.

And the ones produced within the breast tissues can equally leak into the bloodstream.
