CANCER STATISTICS IN NIGERIA
Anybody who looks at the official cancer statistics of Nigeria should worry.
According to the last published data of the National Cancer Control Plan (2018), 102,000 cases of cancer were officially reported annually, while 72,000 deaths were attributed directly to the disease.
According to this report breast cancer is the most common incident of cancer among women with a mortality rate of 51%. While prostate cancer is the most common among men in Nigeria.
The data of the Global Cancer Observatory 2018 (Globocan), however, revealed a slightly higher annual recorded cancer cases in Nigeria; 115 950 cases .
And the spread is follows:
- Breast cancer: 22.7%
- Cervical cancer: 12.9%
- Prostate cancer: 11.3%
- Colorectal cancer: 5.8%
- Non-Hodgkin lymphoma: 4.6%
- Other cancer types: 42.7%
This data clearly showed that number of women diagnosed with cancer is higher than that of men.
Other Cancer Statistics in Nigeria as recorded by Globocan in 2018 include the following:
- Liver cancer cases: 4,849
- Colon cancer: 4,789
- Ovary cancer: 5,508
- Rectum cancer: 4,709
- Leukaemia: 5,294
- Lung cancer: 1,523
- Pancreas cancer: 1,359
